Résumé / Abstract

This article reviews the issues relating to corrosion behavior, coating technology, and magnetic properties of certain austenitic stainless steels being considered as candidate materials for the nonmagnetic advanced double hulls of future U.S. Navy combatants. The issues are discussed by considering the properties of the domestically produced stainless steels AISI Type 316 (UNS S31600), Nitronic 50 (UNS S20910), and AL 6XN (UNS N08367) and the German Navy's experience with the German stainless steel 1.3964.9, which has been used extensively as a nonmagnetic hull material for their submarines and mine countermeasure vessels. The article also identifies the need for an environmentally acceptable coating system capable of preventing crevice corrosion at the crevice formed between the stainless steel and the paint film. Issues needing clarification by further research and testing are noted.
