Ibn Khaldun's Views on Language Learning : Their Relevance to Language Learning Today

Auteur(s) / Author(s)

JOHN J. ;

Résumé / Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate Ibn Khaldun's views on language learning as presented in the third volume of « Muqaddimah » and to examine their relevance to language learning today. Although what he says about language learning relating specifically to the learning of Arabic (what he calls the Mudar language), the principles that underlie his pronouncements on the subject are of universal application. His views on the learning of Arabic are expressed in the context of his philosophy of education, which in its turn occurs within the larger context of his sociology of knowledge. These views are informed by his awareness of the prevalent need in the medieval Islamic world for non-Arab Muslims to learn the Arabic language for religious (and even secular) reasons. As a result of this, what he wrote about language learning has much to do with the learning of Arabic as a second language by non-Arab Muslims who already had knowledge of their mother tongue
