Résumé / Abstract

Most European sulphur is derived from impurities in natural gas and crude petroleum. It is mainly produced by the Claus Process which essentially involves the extraction and concentration of hydrogen sulphide, which is subsequently oxidized to sulphur by sulphur dioxide. Resource requirements, energies and emissions are thus basically all fuel-related. Sulphur production by this route serves two useful purposes in that not only does it minimize undesirable impurities in petroleum and natural gas but also generates a useful by-product. Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) considered in this study is mainly used for the neutralization of anionic surfactants after sulphation and sulphonation. It is produced from salt (sodium chloride) typically mined by solution techniques and subsequent electrolysis. Energy requirements, atmospheric emissions and solid waste generated in the production of caustic soda are mainly resulting from the electrolysis of the sodium chloride. The electrolysis requires a high amount of electricity. Because of the different use of resources for electricity generation (coal, gas, crude oil, nuclear energy) in different countries, the atmospheric emissions and solid waste differ between caustic soda used in the different surfactant systems, which are produced in different countries.
