Résumé / Abstract
A precise forecast of the geological conditions along the axes of the base-tunnels is crucial for the planning and realization of the AlpTransit project. In respect to lenght and overburden of the tunnels, civil engineers will have to go beyond currently established technology. Apart from the expected high temperatures and pressures and known difficulties like karst-zones with high water discharge and potentially gas-bearing as well as weak rock-formations, the Gotthard base-tunnel will have to cross tectonic units, that will allow tunneling only by extensive use of special civil-engineering technology. The Federal Department of Transportation, Communication and Energy (EVED) has installed an expert-board of earth-scientists (FKGA) to control the concepts and reports of the consulting geologists on behalf of the Federal Office of Transportation (BAV).
