FUKUOKA Y. A future perspective on human environment of a city-Effects of plants and waters in urban climate and their future image-. Jpn. J. Biometeor., 29 (Suppl.) : 71-76, 1992.-In English dictionary, we could find that green has many meanings beside plants. To discuss the relationship among plants, climate and human being and to deal with them integratively are a purpose of urban climatology. The relation between plants and climate depends upon the latter's scale. Inside the boundary layer of urban atmosphere, the plants have influences on the climate and it is important to consider the size and species of the plants. For example, the most effective range of plants is thought to be 300 m in radius by Honjo et al. (1987). The qualitative analysis and heat balance theory are necessary for clarifing the effects on urban climate. As for the relationship between plants and human being, there are psychological-medical effects and tree-planting agriculture. Especially, the tree-planting inside city is significant for the cooling effect to lesson the heat-island. Such a cool-island effect is originated from traditional Feng-shui philosophy of China, that is, Feng-shui forest (windbreak) and Kohdoh-ju (street tree). Therefore, the author thinks that Monsoon Asia has to conserve urban environment in the way suitable to Monsoon Asia itself. In conclusion, it is quite necessary for us to estimate quantitatively the most appropriate density of city parks and street trees. And concerning global environmental problems, the estimation of contributions of urban heat-island and green's cooling effect to the global warming is one of the most urgent theme for urban climatology.
