Résumé / Abstract
Studies were conducted for three production seasons between 1988 and 1991 to measure water use of drip-irrigated strawberry plants and to evaluate the effects of soil tension management level on fruit yield and drip irrigation water requirement. Water balance lysimeters were designed and installed to measure monthly water requirements of drip-irrigated strawberry plants. Drip-irrigated strawberry plots that were established next to the lysimeter facility used tensiometers to schedule irrigations with treatment management levels of 5, 10, and 15 kPa of soil tension. Soil tension levels did not affect yield in the field plot studies in any of the three seasons. Irrigation decreased with increasing soil tension threshold. Seasonal irrigation differences were greatest between the 5- and 10-kPa treatments where application differences ranged from 77 to 130 mm while seasonal differences between 10- and 15-kPa treatments ranged from 27 to 36 mm. Monthly and seasonal water use from the LYSI arrangement plants was very close to the 10- and 15-kPa field plot irrigation applications. The LYS2 arrangement data included the soil evaporation component which ranged from 25 to 35% of Penman grass reference evapotranspiration (ETo). Monthly crop coefficients were determined for drip-irrigated strawberry plants for use with the modified Penman, pan evaporation, and solar radiation-based Blaney-Criddle evapotranspiration (ET) and consumptive use estimation methods. Monthly crop coefficients (kc) increased linearly from months 2 through 6 after transplant establishment. Linear regression analyses of kc versus month for each of the above ET methods yielded models with r
2 values of 0.94 to 0.97. The results of this study provide crop coefficients for irrigation scheduling and water budgeting procedures associated with drip-irrigated strawberry production in a humid region.
