Résumé / Abstract

This article based on a paper delivered by the author at SASMEX 96 held in Brighton attempts to eleucidate the concept of a VTMIS (vessel traffic management information system) by defining, the different parts of a VTMIS. The use of the latter notion is rapidly increasing in circles associated with maritime safety since it was used in the preparation of transport projects within the European Fourth Framework Research Programme. It was evident that under the absence of a common understanding of the elements and the scope of a VTMIS, different meanings of VTMIS were used. Too vague a description leads to confusion and this paper is meant to contribute to the understanding of a VTMIS to prove that the concept is a worthwhile one.
