Résumé / Abstract

The official and scholarly efforts at documenting Tibetan culture in exile have been descriptive evaluations based on a time and space-bounded notion of the 'rich cultural heritage of Tibet', which conveys the idea of a refugee society that is stable and unified. Such public representations of Tibetanness filtered through the 'cultural preservation' rhetoric have tended to gloss over the plurality that exists in exilic life and in the modes of and motivations for interpreting Tibet that lie outside the dominant paradigm constructed by the exile administration in Dharamsala. This paper seeks to examine the interactive and representational dynamics of exile Tibetans' emergent culture by engaging texts and materials that take account of the varied and contested identities and practices in the diaspora and the imaginaries of Tibet that are continually being constructed, which runs counter to the stereotyped ways in which Tibetans are read.
