Résumé / Abstract

An 80-year-old female patient presented with weakness and a hypertensive crisis. Prior to admission the patient had been taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs over a period of two weeks for activated osteoarthritis of the knee. Blood chemistry revealed acute renal insufficiency and hemolytic anemia with thrombocytopenia. Antihypertensive treatment with normalization of blood pressure values resulted in correction of the hemolytic parameters. A hypertensive crisis is a well-described trigger of hemolysis; here we discuss the differential diagnosis and pathophysiological mechanisms.
