Résumé / Abstract

In preparation of future annual surveys modelled on a bill on the introduction of commercial service statistics, which is at present being discussed in pre-parliamentary advisory committees, the Federal Bureau for Statistics conducted a survey in companies operating in parcel, express and courier services. The survey was conducted on a voluntary basis under 7 Abs. 2 of the Federal Statistics Law and portrayed the current situation of this branch of business, including size, production bases as well as services rendered and cost situation of the companies transacting business in this field. The present article initially gives an account of the pilot survey's preparation and its execution. Number and structure of employees, types of vehicles employed as well as items transported are presented as the most important results. Furthermore, sales are established according to modes of dispatch and regions, while investments are classified according to vehicles, real estates and buildings and business equipment. Concluding and taking into account basic aspects, the problem of finding an appropriate survey unit is pointed out as well as those of classifying parcel, express and courier services as branches of business and also of finding necessary proceedings for official statistical surveys.
