Résumé / Abstract

As the notion of human singularity continues to erode, non-human animals have ceased to be amorphous objects and have acquired subjectivity in their own right. The agrarian ethic of the writer Jean-Loup Trassard has always respected the ontological status of non-human animals. His short stories, in particular, evoke uncanny encounters linking people and animals, proving that the imagination has a role to play in combating speciesism. Jacques Derrida's experience of otherness when confronted by his eat's bottomless gaze shatters his human ability to conceptualize the animal's existence. In the works of both Trassard and Derrida, such fluidity and vulnerability take the reader to the limits of anthropomorphism and contribute to animal rights discourse.
