Résumé / Abstract
Instead of concentrating on a specific topic, apocryphal writings have a certain tendency to elaborate by making use of the stylistic device that ancient rhetoric knew as amplification. In his treatise "On the Sublime," written perhaps in the first century C.E., Longinus establishes a difference between sublimity and amplification and defmes the two techniques as follows: "Sublimity lies in elevation, amplification (αυξησi?) rather in amount; and so you often find sublimity in a single idea, whereas amplification always goes with quantity and a certain degree of redundancy."' Quantity and a certain degree of redundancy are also characteristic of the two apocalypses that guide us on a journey with Paul through heaven and hell. Both texts are easily identified as amplifications of a short passage in Second Corinthians, which will therefore serve as our starting point.
