Résumé / Abstract

This paper focuses on Thangchhuah as a ceremonial feast in Pre-modern Mizo society that provided a way to attain a higher status in the society as well as in the life after death. Consequently, Thangchhuah became an integral part of Mizo culture. The paper would also focus on the rich variety of food, its symbolic and literal description in Mizo society. These ceremonial functions can be looked at as essential features of a cultural system that gave meaning to their existence and development. It would be based on archival material, folklore, oral history and conclude by emphasizing the linkage between feasting and identity.
