Résumé / Abstract

In 1945, Marija Novak finished with distinction the fifth, final year of the Ljubljana teachers ' college. However, like some of her school friends who came from religious families, she was not allowed the take the final matura examinations. This decision shocked her, but after a few years, due to a shortage of teachers, she was by decree appointed to a teaching post in the remote Rovte above Logatec. During her five years there, she forged long lasting ties with her pupils. The warmth, dedication and unity, although times were difficult, are also expressed by a photograph from Rovte, taken in the school year 1950/51, which was chosen by the Slovenian School Museum as the central photograph of the exhibition "Teachers in the new social reality between 1945 and 1963". Alongside the exhibition, we organised a meeting "The story behind the title photograph", at which Mimi Novak and her former pupils described to us their memories, emphasising that they accepted the situation in which they lived silently, without big words. "The classroom was warm in the winter not only because of the stove but also because of our teacher s care for us, " is a small, but honest statement, expressed by Mimi Novak pupils.
