Résumé / Abstract

Perylene monoimides and diimides have applications as luminescent materials and in organic photovoltaic devices as chromophores and conducting materials. Materials in which these compounds are oriented in a preferred direction will possess useful anisotropic properties that are not attainable from materials in which the compounds are randomly oriented. Anisotropic materials of these compounds can be prepared by taking advantage of the unique properties of chromonic liquid crystals. In this paper we describe the principles for designing perylene monoimides and diimides with desired optical properties and chromonic liquid-crystalline properties. In addition, we demonstrate the fabrication of anisotropic optical materials via organization of these compounds into a lyotropic chromonic liquid-crystalline phase.
