Résumé / Abstract

World renowned researcher, celebrated chemical engineer, innovator, teacher par excellence with more than 3 decades of teaching and industrial experience, Prof J B Joshi, is an admirable exemple of the above statement. The R. T. Mody Professor of Chimecal Technology and Director of UICT was appointed in 1999 and has since taken UICT to greater heights with his innovative thinking and the rapport he has built with accomplished past alumni and the industry. (See box for the impressions of his mentor Prof M M Sharma). A legend in his own lifetime, 59 year old Prof Joshi has the signal honour of being selected as a Diamond along with his teacher Prol M M Sharma and other stalwarts like Dr R A Mashelkar, Dr Homi Sethna, et al during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of UDCT in 1994. Shantiswarup Bhatnagar Award (1991), Vishwakarma Medal (2000), Maharashtra State Best Teacher Award (2004), Innovator of the Year Award (2005), etc, are just some of the honours he has received. UICT received full autonomy and the status of a separate University during his tenure. In the light of all his achievements, the authors interviewed this visionary who gives concrete shape to his dreams for his alma mater. The fact that the interview materialized only recently reveals another characteristic of the technologist turned Director-he speaks of his dreams only when the process of transforming them into realities is set to roll.
