Résumé / Abstract

After the recent remarkable changes, the Sardinian traditional marriage habits and family configuration - with the less subordinate position women now hold - appear to us as even more progressive than it is elsewhere in Europe. In Sardinia, they not only constitute a de-parentalized system - in its most traditional form itself - but they also seem to be responding to the new western generalized habits of neo-locality and mono-nuclearity. They even seem in line with some contemporary practices of premarital or non-marital cohabitation. If such facts and considerations take us far from preconceptions about the autochthony and the inimitable singularity of Sardinian lifestyles, they also, however, provide new ground to the topos of archaism. For example, they yield the theme of Sardinian matriarchy, and they suggest retrieving, for Sardinia too, some hypothesis similar to that of Marija Gimbutas on the most ancient European and Mediterranean rural societies, characterized by the prevailing of the feminine in an age of mother goddesses: Sardinia would have preserved up to present days some tenacious relic of such contexts, from the Neolithic through the age of Nuraghi, and the various foreign patriarchal dominations.
