Résumé / Abstract

At the end of last century a debate arose among aristotelian scholars around the unity of metaphysics as a science. A conflict appeared to exist between that component of metaphysics which is ontological (as the science of being as being) and that which is theological (as the science of the supreme causes and of the first principles). This debate extended to thomistic circles. In the light of an analysis of a series of texts, this article seeks to present the thought of Thomas Aquinas on the unity of metaphysics as a science. For Aquinas it is the most universal science (having ens commune as object) and, at the same time, the most sublime (having God as end insofar he is causa totius esse). St. Thomas, following Aristotle, completes a two-fold reduction of all things to a certain unity, both in the categorial level (one says being in many ways, but of these there is one, which expresses being in its fullest manner and in virtue of which all others are said to be, that is, substance; for this reason metaphysics, as ontology, is above all a usiology), and in the hierarchical-transcendental level (there is also an order between the diverse substances, and there is one of them, which is in such an eminent way that all the others depend on: God; for this reason metaphysics is a theology). Thus, in both components there is an order with a grading according to a more and a less, which refers to a summum, in which the others participate. This brings us to the famous quarta via demonstration of God's existence, which has an Aristotelian, Neo-platonic and Avicennian matrix. This way makes reference to the doctrine of participation (only God is being, the others have being by participation) and consequently to the analogy of being, which is the condition of possibility of metaphysics
