Résumé / Abstract
This paper undertakes a comparison of two discourse markers that punctuate the spontaneous speech of the younger generations in the US and in France : the ubiquitous like, which has now migrated far beyond its origins among American teenagers, and its up-and-coming French congener genre. The functional and diachronic parallelism of these two particles is striking and has important implications for cross-language discourse analysis and/or the possibility of positing discourse universals.
