Résumé / Abstract
The morphology and anatomy of Sertularia mirabilis (Verrill 1873) (Hydrozoa, Leptomedusae) shoots were studied at the main developmental post-larval stages of the colony. Secondary feather-like shoots of this colonial hydroid have large sizes (up to 15-25 cm in height) and differ in the spatial organization between their stems and branches. Primary shoots of this species developing from settled planulae are described for the first time. As a colony develops, the spatial organization changes, and large secondary shoots are formed. The anatomical study has revealed some new features of colonial hydroids. A thin ectodermal inner lining, which covers the outer skeleton is shown. Soft tissues of the shoots represent a network of branching canals, and its morphology is different in the stem and branches. The formation of this complex network of canals and ectodermal inner lining continues after the new skeleton structures have been completed. The organization of the network of canals closely resembles a vessel system in higher plants with similar phyllotaxis.
