Résumé / Abstract

The first Encyclical of Benedict XVI presents the love of God for humanity, revealed in the Old Testament but especially incarnate in Jesus Christ, as the basis of the Church's care for all kinds of needs in this world. According to the Pope, the charity and aid work of the Church, which was already apparent in the pastoral structure of the early Jerusalem community as it was in the early centuries of the Church in the Roman Empire, constitutes one of the three aims of the Church's mission. The other two depend on the preaching of the gospel and the celebration in the liturgy of salvation, which is God's action on behalf of humanity. The article synthezises the main ideas of the Encyclical and evaluates them. The three main elements about which questions are raised are 1) the disappearance of the Kingdom of God, which was the central theme of the preaching of Jesus; 2) the relegation to the State of the fight for justice, reducing the task of the Chruch to merely social aid work; 3) the programmatic character of the Encyclical for the whole of Benedict XVI's papacy. In conclusion, the overall goal of the Church seems to be limited to the sphere of spirituality and aid. It marks a step of departure from the Theology of Liberation, for example, as if God had lost his love of justice which the prophets proclaimed as a typically divine characteristic.
