Résumé / Abstract
Philosophers such as Condorcet, defending universalist principles, usually based on classical rationalism and the Enlightenment, tend to identify natural and social sciences, being acritically optimists concerning history. Contrariwise, those defending particularist, relativist and traditional principles tend to consider social sciences as autonomous and try to understand the inherent truth of the so-called archaic and non-European cultures, by means of an intuituve and reconstructive impulse. G. B. Vico and J. G. Herder are moderate representatives of this tendency. By criticizing both interpretations the author considers that it is possible to try a synthesis of both principles, considered as complementary: a universal ethics (specially humans rights) could be taken as the basis for an effective right to difference.
