Résumé / Abstract
Material remains from the early Neolithic period, that is, the Impresso culture, were first registered in Istria in the 1950's. Some fifteen archaeological sites from the period have been discovered, all in southern Istria. Most of these sites are mentioned in various publications, while the recovered artifacts have only been partly presented in published materials. The site of Vrcevan is one of the poorly known and unpublished sites. It is situated 1,850 m to the northeast of the Neolithic settlement onVizula and 3,450 m to the west of the Neolithic settlement at Kargadur. Vrcevan was among the first sites dating from the early Neolithic period to be discovered in Istria. Several ceramic fragments recovered from the site, characteristic of the Impresso culture, are kept in the storeroom of the Archaeological Museum of Istria in Pula. In late 2002 and early 2003 rescue archaeological excavations were carried out. The research brought to light a considerable number of new interesting finds of material culture, the analysis of which is the basis of this paper. A large number of ceramic fragments as well as about a dozen lithic artifacts were recovered at Vrcevan above Medulin in the course of the rescue archaeological excavations in 2002/2003. Only a few finds can be dated to antiquity, while the majority was generally dated back to the prehistoric period. All the most significant prehistoric finds were dated exclusively to the early Neolithic period, or more precisely, the Impresso culture. Though the stratigraphic situation is not clear, the stylistic analysis of the techniques and motives applied to the ceramic artifacts leads us to assume that the period in which the early Neolithic settlement was founded is that of the end of the A2 phase and the beginning of the B1 phase according to J. Müller, that is, to phase I of the Impresso culture according to S. Batovic, as well as that the settlement existed during the B2/C phases according to J. Miiller, that is, during phase II according to S. Batovic.
