Résumé / Abstract
This article presents the history of library automation in Armenia from its beginnings and describes the evolution and challenges faced by the library community on its difficult way to digitization. The history of automation and computerization of Armenian libraries has developed through 15 years - a short time as measured by humans. During this period Armenia became an independent state, faced a political and economic crisis, moved from a centralized economy management system to a market-based economy. Integration processes with European Union structures are in an active phase. Libraries are also in a renovation and cardinal reconstruction process. Armenian libraries as public entities are under the subordination of central or local governments and are funded through either the national budget or the regional government budget. At the national level, funding is coming from the Ministry of Culture and Youth Affairs, the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development, and the Ministry of Education and Science. On the other hand, the university libraries are in more privileged positions: universities are self-governed institutions of a public nature and their activities are regulated by the Law of the Republic of Armenia on Education, which was approved by the Armenian parliament in 1999. Universities have their own budget, and the university library system is currently being funded from the state budget and also from the universities' own budget.
