Résumé / Abstract
The Middle Isarco valley is located in the Southalpine realm. Here greenschist facies metamorphic rocks of Variscan age are intruded in Permian times by the Brixen granodiorite and Chiusa Diorite. In the following the basement was exhumed and covered by the Athesian Volcanic flows (SASSI & SPIESS, 1993; VISONÀ, 1995; VON RAUMER et alii, 2003; BENCIOLINI et alii, 2001; fig. 2). Thick glacial, fluvioglacial and glaciolacustrine sediments of Pleistocene age fill the Bressanone basin (CASTIGLIONI, 1977; figs. 2A and 3). More recently, eluvial and colluvial dynamics affected the mountain sides and today climatic data show humid continental characters (fig. 5). Wine production in the Isarco Valley reveals high quality, and a wide range of characters (tabs. 1, 2, 3). Climate, basement and Quaternary geology, and soil characters are compared in order to define physiographic units with characters related to the local wine production. This analysis reveals that at least three main units exist. The first one is located around the Novacella monastery, where the best Gewurztraminer and Kerner wines are produced. The vineyards grow upon a thick sedimentary cover deriving from the glacial deposits of Pleistocene age. The second unit is located in the surroundings of the Sabiona monastery, between Chiusa and Velturno, where the best Sylvaner wine is produced. This area is characterized by thin eluvial deposits hosting coarse soils rich in components deriving from altered diorite. The last unit is devoted to the production of Chardonnay, Veltliner, Pinot Nero and Pinot Grigio. It is characterized by a thick colluvium rich in silt and shaly components.
