Résumé / Abstract

Low-cost refrigerators that use a single stream, throttle expansion cycle of a mixture of refrigerants have recently been developed for operation between 65 K and 150 K These have proved to be exceptionally reliable and comparable in efficiency with Stirling and Gifford-McMahon cryocoolers. They are finding use in many applications where cost is a controlling factor. These include coolers for cryo-acceleration of workstations, for biomedical storage, low noise amplifiers for communication equipment, x-ray detectors and for cryosurgical devices. We give a brief history of this development and address those issues that could lead to still wider application of these coolers.
