Résumé / Abstract

Until now, the discussions and campaigns about gender issues in Timor Lorosa'e (East Timor) have been limited only to women. However, the participation of men in analyzing men's roles concerning gender issues and in working to improve the situation of gender discrimination is actually very essential and valuable for the whole community of Timor Lorosa'e. This is very important because the national constitution of The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (RDTL) has guaranteed the existence of equality between men and women. The Association of Antiviolence Men, called Asosiasaun Mane Kontra Violencia (AMKV) in Tetun languange, is a national network organization in Timor Lorosa'e, which has been promoting and making efforts to end gender-based violence. This association was founded in June 2002 and aimed to foster men's awareness of gender issues. AMKV, through its national campaigns, actively struggles against gender-based violence particularly in rural areas. In this case, AMKV always works together with women's organizations and other organizational networks. One of the components of AMKV's activities in the national campaign is to organize workshops at the rural community level in eight districts of Timor Lorosa'e. In doing the workshop activities, AMKV always uses the popular education methodology developed by Paulo Freire, a famous educator from Brazil. Using popular education techniques, AMKV can explore gender-based violence problems and discuss how the community itself can find alternative solutions, particularly by discussing the problems among the men. On another level, the national campaign is intended to develop public awareness by using posters, banners, and billboards. Up until now, AMKV has been doing its activities based on voluntary work by its members. Since it is a national movement or network, the association is made of members of other organizations and individuals who live in Timor Lorosa'e and also are working partners of AMKV itself.
