Résumé / Abstract

The present article examines a hitherto unpublished coloured drawing of a stained glass window donated by Margaret of Austria in 1530 to St Rombout's Cathedral in Mechlen. The choice of arniurial bearings and the iconographic theme of this window link it to the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, in whose chapel it was placed. The order very likely addressed itself expressly to Margaret of Austria for the decorated glazing of this chapel: Philibert of Savoy carried the prestigious title of "Titular King of Cyprus and Jerusalem". Despite the reservations necessarily imposed by records of since disappeared monuments and the many questions it raises, the Valenciennes drawing invites us to see in the stained glass window offered by Margaret of Austria for the chapel of the Holy Sepulchre a monument to the memory of her deceased husband. Certain stylistic characteristics in the drawing suggest that the decisive impulse for the development of the High Renaissance style in stained glass came, not exclusively from Charles V as generally advanced, but also from Margaret of Austria.
