Résumé / Abstract

Purpose: Treatment of endometrial cancer in Austria is not restricted to specialized tumor centers but also is carried out in general hospitals. The aim of the quality assurance program of the Austrian Association of Gynecologic Oncology was a first evaluation of the status quo. Material and Methods: We submitted a questionnaire for endometrial cancer patients diagnosed in 2002 to all Austrian gynecologic departments that asked about the most relevant predictors of treatment quality. Results: A total of 372 questionnaires were returned. This represents about 40% of all newly diagnosed endometrial cancer patients of Austria. One third was treated in the 5 major institutions (A centers), while the remaining patients came from 33 minor institutions (B centers). Patients from B centers had, compared to A centers, significantly lower FIGO stages, fewer frozen section biopsies during surgery, fewer bowel surgery procedures, fewer omentectomies but more frequent radical hysterectomies. In particular peritoneal cytology was missing in every second patient from a B center whereas it was missing in only 17% of patients in A centers (p < 0.001). Missing values or procedures not performed were reported in 3 % and 6% in A and B centers respectively (p = 0.06). Conclusion: Treatment of endometrial cancer in Austria is not restricted to cancer centers. Staging recommendations were followed to a significantly higher degree in larger institutions.
