Résumé / Abstract
Introduction. Objective: verify if rice meal solution is equal or more effective than Vida Suero Oral (oral saline solution) for high fecal output reduction of dehydrated infants less than 6 months of age by acute non-choleric diarrhea. Material and methods. A comparative therapeutic clinical assay was conducted and included 34 masculine subjects less than 6 months of age (average 4.8 months), with non-choleric acute diarrhea with high fecal output (greater than 10 mL/kg/h). Children of both groups received Oral Rehydration Solution previously during a 3 hours period and were randomly distributed in 2 groups, group A (17 cases) received rice meal solution and to group B (17 cases) Vida Suero Oral was administered. Results. The sample was homogenous referring to: age, dehydration degree, fecal output and total liquid intake. Success was considered by 30% reduction of fecal output during the first 2 hours after admittance. In group A, 13 successes were obtained and 4 failures, group B achieved 4 success and 13 failures (P = 0.002). Good clinical response in both groups was observed and with serum electrolytes without significant changes, always in normal values. Conclusion. Rice meal solution reduces more effectively than Vida Suero Oral the fecal output in less than 6 months infants with non-choleric acute diarrhea; we recommended its use after administering Vida Suero oral by 2 to 3 previously hours.
