Résumé / Abstract

With a current cumulative oil recovery of about 6%, Albania's largest oil field Patos-Marinza (initially commissioned for commercial production in 1939) still potentially contains more than 16 million m3 (100 million b) of oil reserves. The reservoirs, consist of unconsolidated sandstone and limestone containing oil with API gravities below 12° and of very high viscosity, located at depths of almost 2000 m (the most significant is the Driza reservoir with gravities down to 7° API and dead oil viscosities up to 40,000 centipoise, cp). A consortium named Anglo Albanian Petroleum (AAP), consisting of Albpetrol Albania, Preussag Energy Germany (2003 OMV Austria took over Preussag's interests), Premier Oil Britain and the IFC (the private sector arm of the World Bank) planned to improve oil recovery in this area. Test wells producing 1 to 2 m3/d (6 to 13 b/d) yielded large rate improvements of up to 30 m3/d (190 b/d) using Progressive Cavity Pumps (PCP's) with producing sand cuts around 10 to 35%. PVT analysis of the oil showed a strong tendency to foam (gas in microbubbles not forming a continuous gas phase) below the bubble point, near the initial reservoir pressure. Core tests with different depletion rates resulted in primary oil recoveries of more than 30%. A Plan of Development (PoD) predicted recovery of about 14 million m3 (90 million b) of oil over a 15 year life with a peak export capacity of 4770 m3/d (30,000 bpd). A two step development plan was initiated. The PoD was to install facilities to provide an Early Production Scheme (EPS) with a nominal export capacity of 2385 m3/d (15,000 b/d), followed by a Life of Field Scheme (LOFS) where additional facilities were provided to achieve a nominal export capacity of 30,000 b/d.
