Résumé / Abstract

An extensive survey on the large variety of electrochemical processes for water treatment is given. By the proper choice of the electrochemical reactor, by adaptation of current density and cell voltage, the use of a tailor-made electrode material and if necessary of ion- exchange material, different electrochemical processes for water treatment can be established. These processes can be used for water disinfection, the on-site production of oxidants and disinfectants, for water softening, dehalogenation of organic compounds, metal deposition and for the regeneration of activated carbon. Electrodialysis, electrodeionization, electroflotation, electroflocculation, the electrochemical combustion of organic compounds and the electrochemical breaking of emulsions belong also to the group of electrochemical water treatment processes.
