Résumé / Abstract

The aim of the author is to distinguish certain aspects related to the use of the epistemic form in certain sentence structures of Spanish (forms of -ré y -ría in their traditional usage considered as probable.) In order to do so, she takes into account the existence of two types of hypotactic periods: 1) the «período hipotáctico con modus implicito» made up of two propositions, the main one and the subordinate one (different both semantically and in function); in the periods of this type the action of the predicate on the subordinate (that appears to be patterned by the epistemic structures) depends on an understood modal abstract verb; and 2) the «periodo hipotáctico con modus explicito» which is made up of more than two propositions, the first one has the modus and carries out the function of main proposition, while the patterned proposition usually occupies the syntactic position immediately behind the modus. When analysing how the structures that make up the status incluyente ('epistemic status of possibility') function, it is remarkable that the forms that serve to express problematic judgements of possibility do not combine with certain subordinates and/or with main ones inside the hypotactic period, and, when they do combine, it is only when certain conditions are present.
