Résumé / Abstract
This article proposes a new etymology for the Lomb.-Emil. type 'scottomaglia/-o' 'nickname' (already represented by the Old Crem. of the XV-XVI century 'scottomaia'). Till now the word was concordantly and undoubtedly considered the issue of a vulgar Lat. COSTUMALJUM (derived from
*COSTUMEN <
*CONSUETUMEN for the class. Lat. CONSUETUDO, INIS, see for alls REW 2176). Semantic morphologic and phonetic considerations induce instead the Author to think 'scottomaglio/-a' as the issue of a vulg. Lat.
*EXCOGNOMINALJA (derived from class. Lat. COGNOMEN 'nickname') come to the neolat. forms through a strong dissimilation (-gnm- > -tm- or -dm-) probably supported by a paretymological approach to 'scottare', in the old Lomb. attested for 'to brand'
