Résumé / Abstract
The demand for geographic information geocoded by user-friendly and standardized coordinates, drives to think about the role of map projections. The interdisciplinary nature of GIS applications and the variety of stored objects produce new consumers and new uses of geographic information. Thus, looking into the future, it is time to definitely reduce local cartographic systems to a common one. In selecting a map projection to be associated to WGS84, it is obvious, for historical and cultural reasons, to grant the preference to the Gauss projection, nevertheless defining application criteria different from the past. The most urgent need is to overcome the discontinuity generated by two o three zones (Gauss-Boaga or UTM). The author proposes a new cartographic system, with one 12° zone covering the whole national territory, named «Fuso Italia», with specific application conditions.
