Résumé / Abstract

The compression strength of masonry, as obtained from the tests of stack bond masonry prisms. is of paramount importance in the design, even more since the behavior of such masonry is strongly direction-dependent, as shown by several past studies focused on the stress and strain distribution along the height of the stack bond prisms. Within this context, the aim of this study is to carry out a 3-D nonlinear finite-element analysis of concrete hollow-brick prisms subjected to uniaxial compression. Both the Drucker-Prager yield criterion and the isotropic-damage model are used in order to efficiently describe concrete and mortar behavior. The identification of the parameters of the composite material (hollow block + mortar), such as cohesion, friction angle and damage parameters, is accomplished by fitting the available test data, by means of the finite-element nonlinear analysis. The results shed light on the response of the mortar and blocks under uniaxial compression. Taking advantage of the numerical results, a simple formulation is worked out for the compressive strength of the concrete hollow-block masonry prisms, and the predictions of the proposed equation turn out to be in good agreement with both the available test data and the predictions of previously-developed equations.
