Résumé / Abstract
The rescue excavations of site 11/12 in Ślęza have been carried out by the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology PAN, Laboratory of the Archaeology of Silesia, on the commission of the Agency for Freeway Construction that funded the research. The excavation covered the area 40 m wide and 110 m long, adjacent from the north to the actual highway, and the area 50 m wide and 200 m long to the south of the highway. It has been confirmed that previously registered sites 11 and 12 belong to one vast settlement complex. Altogether, 927 archaeological featured have been discovered on the site. The oldest settlement phase was related to the Ahrensburg culture of the Late Paleolithic (belonging to the technological complex with leaf-shape points). Another discovery - a flint-processing place - is from the Mesolithic. The earliest traces of farming cultures represent potsherds of the Linear Band Pottery culture found in the cultural layer, and sherds of the Stroked Band Pottery culture recovered in displaced position in two adjacent pits by the northern border of the excavation trench. Also displaced were two potsherds of the Lengyel-Polgár culture. Four pits belonged to the Funnel Beaker culture. Ceramic and flint material related to that culture has been also found in other 19 pits. All these features were spread in the upper part of a hill that constitute the site. Inferring from the amount of the artifacts, the original number of the Funnel Beaker culture features was higher, but the erosion probably destroyed many of them. The Globular Amphora culture is represented by 6 featured concentrated on the area of 13 m in diameter, and 2 potsherd found outside the concentration. Further, solitary pits have been related to the Corded Ware culture and the Únetice culture. Settlement features of the Lusitian culture (represented by 222 objects of that type) are most numerous on the site. Four of them are dated from the Bronze Age and 73 from Halstatt. We presume that most of
