Résumé / Abstract
Eugeniusz Tomczak argues in Sprawozdania Archeologiczne, Vol. 50, that methods used in archaeological excavations, as well as in conservation of recovered artifacts, should be left to the decision of field explorers, because of the weakness of Poland's agencies responsible for preservation of monuments and their inadequate competence. However, a critical assessment of archaeological conservation service should take into account objective reasons: lack of discussion on questions of theory and practice of the conservation work, inadequate university training of future employees of the service, unavailability of methodological manuals, lack of appropriate educational material and expert help from the academic circles, inadequate numbers of conservation service employees, and a perpetual problem to secure necessary funds for field survey and surveillance of excavation works. The last to mention is decentralizing the State Service for Protection of Historical Monuments implemented on October 1, 1996. This act nullified efforts to work out the overall national policy in this field. They also supervise all archaeological activities in the area of their jurisdiction, indicate endangered archaeological sites and qualify them as priority research objects, mitigate attempts to excavate well recognized and safe sites, which - according to the European Convention on the Protection of Archaeological Heritage (revised), ratified by Pola
