Résumé / Abstract
Patients with ambiguous genitalia (intersexuality) require extensive medical care. Especially where a severe form of intersexuality is present, fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) studies enable finding the underlying genetic defect in a subset of patients Using molecular cytogenetic techniques and recombinant clones (artificial chromosomes) from the Human Genome Project we investigate selected genes and candidate regions, including at chromosomes 9p24.3, 10q26, 11p13, 13q32-34, Xq28 and Yp11.2. The molecular cytogenetic diagnosis represents an integrated part of the medical treatment. The Interdisciplinary Working Group on Intersexuality led by Ute Thyen (Lubeck), established in 2001/2002 and supported by a BMBF grant starting October 2003, aims at improving medical care and extending our knowledge on intersexuality.
