Résumé / Abstract

Purpose: The discontinuation of one arm of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study in 2002 received much attention in the lay arid the professional media worldwide. We studied whether the results of the WHI study affected clinical management of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by practicing gynecologists. Methods: In September 2002 we sent structured questionnaires to all practicing 558 gynecologists in Berlin to survey their management of HRT before and after publication of the WHI study. Results were analyzed according to how long the physicians had been in practice. Results: The overall response rate was 41%. Of physicians in practice for less than 20 years, 49% prescribed HRT less frequently after release of the WHI findings, compared with 27% of physicians in practice for more than 20 years (P = 0.001). Overall, 13% of physicians considered themselves well informed on the subject of HRT, 73 % felt themselves well to adequately informed, and 14% felt poorly informed. 10% of physicians expressed trust in current opinion leaders whereas 11 % expressed no trust. Physicians in practice for more than 20 years tended to trust opinion leaders more often than their younger colleagues did (14 vs. 6%, P > 0.05). Conclusion: Our survey indicates that the WHI results have affected clinical practice regarding HRT in Germany and have caused uncertainty among physicians. The high response rate reflects interest in the subject.
