Résumé / Abstract

Introduction. The purpose of this work is to compare neonatal and fetal mortality rates, prematurity and low-birth weight of infants born from adolescent and adult mothers. Material and methods. This is a retrospective study performed in a general hospital at Rio Blanco, Veracruz (in the Golf of Mexico coast) carried on in the January 1st to December 31st of 1999 period. From clinical charts neonatal and fetal mortality rates, prematurity prevalence, and low-birth weight frequency of infants from adolescent and adult mothers were calculated. Student's t test, X², and Fisher's exact test were used in the statistical analysis. Results. From 1 101 births, 320 (29%) were from adolescent mothers. Prematurity (< 32 weeks of gestational age) was 2.2 and 1.5%; fetal mortality, mortality rate 32.3 and 27.8; neonatal mortality rate 32.3 and 18.1%; and low-birth weight 12.5 and 13.7% for adolescent and adult mothers, respectively. Conclusions. A high frequency of adolescent pregnancies was observed in the population studied; no significative differences were found in perinatal mortality, prematurity, and low-birth weigh in infants from adolescent and adult mothers.
