Résumé / Abstract
The High Pyrenees, particularly those on the Spanish side that are considered in this paper, have suffered the social and economic problems that are typical of all the high mountain aeras of Europe. However, the Pyrennes still harbour an enormous reserve of natural resources that represent a valuable capital that for the implementation of a sustainable development model. Tourism is not only the currently most dynamic economic sector of the area, giving rise to a number of important socio-economic changes, but its increasing diversification into farm and rural tourism, green tourism, adventure sports etc., has led to a considerably reduced environmental impact in comparison with the previously prevailing tourist activities. For this reason, the recent strategies and projects (particularly those promoted by the Pyrenean Workshop Commitee) have been designed to establish a development core based on a model of sustainable tourism. This means encouraging those forms of tourism that will encouragee a greater degree of integration with the natural and social environment; that will act as a support in the maintenance of traditional activities; that will allow greater diversification in rural family economies; and that will correct the negative environmental effects inherited from the past
