Résumé / Abstract
Abelard's Dialogus consists of two conversations (collationes) in which representatives of different standpoints - Philosopher and Jew; Philosopher and Christian - speak with each other. The conversations take place in the presence of a judge who however pronounces no judgement. The second conversation between the Philosopher and the Christian is here read with the question what we - readers of another age - can learn from Abelard about the difference between philosophical and theological ethics. The question shared by the Philosopher and the Christian is the question of the greatest good and the way leading to it. It turns out that the Philosopher thinks of this superlative comparativistically, while the Christian conceives of a maximum which is not derived from comparison. The Christian does not outdo the Philosopher, but rather shows him the possibility of a changed direction of thought.
