Résumé / Abstract

Pet coke used as fuel is taking over an increasing share of the heat consumption in the cement industry. The rise of oil price, combined with a low world market price for the pet coke itself, makes it a still more attractive fuel for the cement industry and other larger fuel consuming industries. Pet coke, being a relatively low reactive fuel, is expected to cause problems with respect to the degree and speed of the burn out process. Certain precautions have to be made to make full use of pet coke. F. L. Smidth & Co has carried out a number of mill and kiln system conversions towards the use of pet coke, proving the use of pet coke to be very feasible. In this paper it will be demonstrated, by the use of industrial case studies that pet coke is a very useful fuel for the cement industry. It will be demonstrated, how pet coke can be ground to required fineness in a ball mill as well as in a vertical roller mill. Furthermore, it will be demonstrated how different kiln types, SP-, ILC- and SLC-kilns, will operate with pet coke being the only fuel used, and how existing kiln systems are modified by implementing the unique SLC-D calciner. Finally, the main pet coke quality parameters for evaluating the possibility of using the pet coke will be explained.
