Résumé / Abstract
A parallel analysis of Origen's two major commentaries preserved in Greek (the Commentary on John and the Commentary on Matthew) gives us some insights into the question of continuity and innovation within the writings of the great Alexandrian and his exegetical practice. Recent studies tend to present Origen's commentaries as a product of his school courses, but as a matter of fact both commentaries display a systematic exegesis always resting on the direct control of the author over his own work. Though it is easier to capture the literary project which is at work in the Commentary on John, displaying through its organic aspects noteworthy affinities with the dogmatic work De principiis, the Commentary on Matthew also reveals literary and even rhetorical or homiletic concerns. Yet, it is true that this late work has been influenced to a larger extent by Origen's activity as a teacher in his school at Caesarea. The frequent recourse to the question-and-answer scheme and the call for a cooperative reader, point more openly to Origen's concrete experience when facing his students.
