Résumé / Abstract

Suppressor of pericarp pigmentation 1 (spp1) is a novel recessive mutation in maize (Zea mays L.) whose phenotypic expression requires the presence of a second gene p1. sppl does not alter composition or level of the pericarp pigments, instead it alters the pattern of pericarp pigmentation. The spp1 phenotype is characterized by suppressed pericarp pigmentation except in cells at and near the silk scar region. spp1 was identified in the inbred line GT119. GT119 was crossed to a line containing a functional p1 allele (Prw), followed by backcrossing the F1 to GT119. We have mapped spp1 in a F2 mapping population involving the inbred line 4Co63 (a non-functional pi allele (Pww) and spp1) and a line containing Prw and spp1. Using SSR markers, we have placed spp1 on chromosome 9 in bin 9.02 between the SSR loci umc1033 and umc1037. Two known flavonoid pathway genes are also localized to this region, the flavone QTL rem1 and the extinct mutation bp1, however spp1 does not appear to be allelic to either gene.
