Résumé / Abstract
An incidence study on urinary catheterization was carried out in the Medicine Unit of the University Hospital of Padua within the framework of a national study. The aim of this study was to estimate urinary catheterization and hospital-acquired urinary tract infection rates, and evaluate antibiotic susceptibility of urinary pathogens isolated, the use of antibiotic drugs and patient management during in-dwelling urethral catheterism. The urinary catheterization rate was 19.9% and was frequently indicated in incontinent patients confined to bed. 26 infections occurred in 2303 catheter-patient-days (11.3/1000 catheter-patient-days) and the incidence of UTI associated with urinary catheter was 11.1% (17.4/1000 catheter-patient-days). To reduce catheter-associated UTI we began providing medical and nursing staff with unit-specific UTI rates and implementation of guidelines for prevention of catheter-associated UTI.
