Résumé / Abstract
Prior to projecting PM 11 in the Gratkorn mill, numerous pilot tests were run to ascertain an optimum coat drying concept. Since the drying energy requirement decreases with each coat, quality losses are ultimately experienced in terms of smoothness, gloss, bonding and offset print evenness. On the example of triple-coated illustration paper the overall energy requirement-not to be mixed up with the energy distribution across the dryer section - was identified as the principal influential factor. The findings suggest a paper surface temperature of at least 65°C to be maintained in the dryer channel in order to ensure the desired product quality. If drying cannot be optimized, the problem-free operating range may nevertheless be extended by selecting suitable coating binders, i.e. soft styrene acrylate copolymers, which help to keep qualities at a high level. The results of pilot coating trials that were confirmed in mill tests are supplemented by laboratory tests that are undertaken to gain a deeper insight into the mechanisms of drying.
