Résumé / Abstract

The diet of North African owls is still poorly known. From 1972 to 1987, some 32 sites were visited to collect Barn Owl (Tyto alba) pellets (and fragments) in the North-Atlantic plains, the Central Plateau and the Fes region. The analysis reveals that small mammals (74,4%) are the most abundant group among the 18398 prey items ; the Algerian Mouse Mus spretus (56,7%) dominates over gerbils (8,8%) and shrews (6,5%). Birds. mainly Passer sp., also contributes to the diet (11,6% of prey), but the species also hunts frogs (3,1%) and reptiles (0,4%). An interesting result is the large proportion (in number of preys not biomass) of insects (10,5% of prey) : Coleoptera (5,5%) and Orthoptera (4,8%) more than 6 mm long. Independently of the mair geographic features, there is a high level of variation among sites, for example the occurrence of Mus spretus peaks at 86,7% of prey in Tiflet and is lowest at 28,5% in Bour'Khaïs where birds are the main prey (42.4%). Barn Owl are particularly opportunistic in Northern Morocco where they hunt the most locally abundant prey, but can be quite selective about size and even palatability of their prey.
