Résumé / Abstract
Today the term »Gnosticism« is no longer an adequate designation for the religious movement which hitherto has been associated with such a term. The scriptures from the »Gnostics« themselves, now known from the discovery of the Nag Hammadi library, draw a much more sophisticated picture than the one we know from the Church Fathers. While it is better to abandon the modern term »Gnosticism«, it is argued that the terms »Gnostic« and »Gnosis« even now can designate this very broad phenomenon. It is suggested that a »Gnostic« myth must contain certain aspects for it to be »Gnostic«, and that the different aspects of such a myth mainly are developed out of the Platonic distinction between an utter transcendent God and a lower secondary Demiurge. The »Gnostic« negative worldview could originate through the Platonic metaphysics, if it is attached to problems of biblical hermeneutics, theodicy, and social and religious conflicts.
